It then identifies how films propagate a sense of fear through creating divisive scenarios in an attempt to affect an ‘us and them’ mentality. It also examines how films  have been used to discuss political issues of their era. This was done through the use of questionnaires, and follow up focus groups which enabled in-depth discussions with participants about their views. The report finds that there has been a significant relationship between the Hollywood film industry and successive American administrations in an attempt to ensure that there has been a constant state of fear, and vigilance amongst its population. It finds that Hollywood has been “called to arms” during the Cold War, and again for the War on Terror. The report crucially finds that the audiences use film as a significant portion of their education  –  shaping their understanding of world events, as audiences are active participants of film.   Candidate Number: 1302020  5  Acknowledgements I would like to express my appreciation to the anonymous individuals for their participation in this project’s Questionnaires, and Focus Groups without which it could not have been possible. I would like to thank all family and friends for their encouragement, and contribution to this project. I would like to thank my dissertation advisor Klaus Dodds, for his help in this process, and his continued support throughout. All academic work used has been referenced. Any misinterpretation of their work is the fault of this Author alone.
