Journal of Mediterranean Studies, 2015 ISSN: 1016-3476 Vol. 24, No. 2: ???Ð???   BLUE IS THE COLOUR OF FORGETTING: MEDITERRANEAN RE-ORIENTATIONS IN ITALIAN CINEMA   P ASQUALE V ERDICCHIO   University of California Ð San Diego  Despite its own history of migration, Italy has been unable to deal with incoming migrants in an adequate manner. The reasons for this can be traced back to contradictory aspects of its progress toward nationhood and various subsequent phases during which distances were taken from any possible Mediterranean connection as a way of declaring the nationÕs status as a European power. This piece reviews work by intellectuals, writers and filmmakers who have countered such a trajectory and have emphasized the transcultural aspects of the Mediterranean sphere. Herein I will illustrate this trend via the analysis of recent cinematographic productions.
