To decrease the difficulty of learning vocabulary, they mustfind the meaning of the words in the dictionary. By using a dictionary it may help thestudents understanding. This research used classroom action research to know the effectsof the dictionary to develop students' vocabulary. In this research, there are three cyclesand those are to make the research is systematical. The data were collected by usingobservation in all of the 7 grade. There are 5 class in will be experimental and there are 2class will be control class. Therefore, a lot of tools when learning vocabulary is a verygood way to help the students, especially for EFL students. The results show that theoffline dictionary was not given an impact on students' vocabulary.Keywords: vocabulary, EFL students, dictionary INTRODUCTION Language is a global area that has specific areas in their one of them isabout the vocabulary. Vocabulary is not a skill in English but when we won't learnabout the language we cannot reck. In language, vocabulary has the main role because vocabulary can be used in all language skills. Vocabulary is one importantknowledge in a language that has a beneficial role for learners in increasing their language ability Mofareh Alqahtani (2015). The importance of vocabulary inlanguage learning and how to be taught. When some people learn about vocabulary, they automatically increasing their skills step by step because of vocabulary as a tool to connect with all of the skills.  According to Rodrigo (2017) "vocabulary knowledge is an essential tool for anylanguage skills; it will also make the understanding for written and spoken textRodrigo Tovar Viera (2017). Vocabulary knowledge in the production of writtentexts: A case study on EFL language learners. Vol. 30, pp 89-105". By using vocabulary our understanding of the writing and speaking will clear enough. In this case, writing and speaking skill always consists of the words.Vocabulary focuses on the words, so that is why this is having an important role inall language skills. However, vocabulary is not only about to learn about themeaning of the words but we must also know about the function of the wordswhen we must use the words in the good situation Idem. If we know the meaning and the function of the words it can make the peopleenjoy to express their ideas. While if the students still confuse and have thelimitation on their vocabulary it will make big problems. If students have a goodvocabularies knowledge in their mind, they can communicate easily, withoutvocabulary knowledge, we cannot do effective communication Rodrigo cited inMin Y.K (2017). Vocabulary knowledge in the production of written texts: A casestudy on EFL language learners. From the explanation before, if someone still confuses about vocabulary it willmake their speaking and writing ability. Speaking and writing skills always appear in every activity especially for the students. Not only that, if the students feelvocabulary is difficult and always think harder, they can unconfidence with their vocabulary. Every student have a different vocabulary knowledge in their mind because they have the limitation. Especially for the people as a foreign languagethat still have the limitation of vocabularies. As a foreign language, they still havedifficulties in two aspects; meaning and function. Those are will be a common problem the students learn about English especially for vocabulary. There areother problems, according to Dellar H and Hocking D, Innovations, LTP states "if you spend most of your time studying grammar, your English will not improve  very much. You will see most improvement if you learn more words andexpressions, Scott Thornbury. How to teach vocabulary. pp. 13". There are a lot of students that feel afraid when they learn about English because they think English is always focused only on grammar. It is not true, because every skill needs vocabulary. Nowadays, the students need to solve the problem of their difficulty when theylearn about vocabulary. There are a lot of treatments for EFL students to decreasetheir misunderstanding when they learn about vocabulary. One of many treatmentsto reduce their difficulty of vocabulary is by using a dictionary. Dictionary is atool to help the EFL students that difficulties in understanding the meaning andthe function of the words Zhiva Shen. (2013). The effects of vocabularyknowledge and dictionary use on EFL reading performance. Vol 6, No. 6. pp 78. In this case, with the dictionary, the EFL students can comfort to find themeaning and the function of the words because the dictionary will facilitate thestudents to find the solution of their problems. In EFL students they still have lack of vocabulary so with the dictionary, they can know the meaning and the functionof the vocabulary. After they know about the meaning and function, they havealready used it in daily activity and all skills. Three previous studies have a similar topic to this research. The first title is "Therole of dictionary strategy in passive vocabulary knowledge acquisition of netgeneration students", this research is by Ahmad Azman Mokhtar, Rafizah MohdRidwan, and Mohd Sofan. Their research focus to motivated by the need to further examine the Net Generation students' perception in using a dictionary to enhancetheir vocabulary knowledge. Next, using this foundation, this paper will whendescribe the efficacy of the dictionary strategy to them. In their research, theyexplain about studies on dictionary use, passive vocabulary knowledge, anddefinition of Net Generation. The participants of this research are 360 universitystudents aged between 18 to 21 y.o. In this research, the researcher collects thedata by questionnaire, so that is why this research is called quantitative research.  For the result, the researcher concludes that the dictionary is very helpful for them because dictionary as a tool to facilitate their unknown and most of them said thestrategy that very helpful for them is dictionary consultation.The second title is "The effect of vocabulary knowledge and dictionary use anEFL reading performance", by Zhifa Shen. This research conducted by theresearcher to investigate the effects of vocabulary knowledge and dictionary useon EFL reading performance. The settings of this research are 110 students in thesecond-year-non English major from three intact classes in Zhejiong GongshangUniversity who were from three different academic disciplines-sociology,statistics, and engineering management. The result showed that the dictionary willimprove the students score on vocabulary size, specific vocabulary, and readingcomprehension. The most effective dictionary from this research is an electronicdictionary because its easily to bring anywhere and anytime.The third title is "The impact of using an electronic dictionary on vocabularylearning and retention of Iranian EFL learners" by Amirian and Heshmatifar. Theresearchers made one focus of this research to investigate the effects of electronicdictionary on learning and long-term retention of the vocabulary of Iranian lower-intermediate EFL learners. For this research, the researchers explained theimportance of using an electronic dictionary and empirical studies on dictionaryuse. 60 female students are studying at a public high school in Sabzerar, Iran andthe researchers used OPS (Oxford Placement Test), this is called independentsample T-test. The result summed up by using electronic dictionary it mayfacilitate the student to find their unfamiliar words and that is why it is a goodsolution for the students. METHODS In this research, the researcher makes two research questions; (1) What is theimpact of a paper dictionary to increase the students' vocabulary? (2) How is thestudents' enthusiasm when they using the dictionary in English?. The firstquestion is very clear what does the researcher wants. As we know every method  that the teacher use in the class always has an impact to the students, it also meansthat the researcher wants to know the paper dictionary will help the student toimprove their vocabulary or not. The second question means when the student usetheir dictionary, what the students' feel after they already know the meaning? For this case, it is very important to know what they feel when they find the meaning.The participants of this research from two different class but at the same gradeand the same level in MTs Al-Musthofa Mojokerto. There are 13 classes in theschool and the researchers choose only two class. The researchers choose 7E and7C to help us collect the data. The two-class will be the class control andexperimental group. The experimental group will be from 7E class and the controlgroup will be from 7C.Pre-testThe pre-test will be divided in the first meeting when the students do the teaching-learning process in the class. It will measure the students' vocabulary skill whenthey fill the pre-test. The pre-test is related with the students material so it willhelp them to fill it. The pre-test only have 15 questions multiple choice and eachstudent must fill it and they do not miss it. The pre-test has a purpose to assess thestudents' basic knowledge or their understanding of the material in the test Hiltoncited in Willis (2015). The importance of pretesting questionnaires: a fieldresearch example of cognitive pretesting the Exercise referral Quality of LifeScale (ER-QLS). The pre-test also will help the researchers to collect the data with a short time, sothat is why this is very helpful.Post-testThis is different from the pre-test, the different aspect is on the time that theresearchers divided the test to the students.
