It surrounds us at every moment, at every turn. We take time as a fact of life.Yet, although we think very little about workings of time, we are at its mercy. In a sense it is all we/you have: on your gravestone, most likely, will be your name and the date you were born and the date you died. PIC!"# C$PI%&: What could we gain by obtaining a 'ers'ective on time, by standing a bit outside of time(  $bout )** years ago +reud uncovered our re'ressed feeling about se. -is discoveries did not change our seual urges, yet his ideas gave us insights that allowed us to be more at ease with this basic drive."ick oble, Deconstructing Time, 2nd  . #dition deconstructingtime.blogs'ot.com0 Page 1  I believe, the same could be said of time. We need to not dwell on the 'ast yet reali2e that it is more im'ortant and accessible than we thought. $s for the future, we can begin to get a gras' of what we can and cannot know and live within its boundaries. $lthough the clock will still continue to tick, our relation to time will be changed. If my e'loration is successful, for eam'le, the 'ast will become more relevant 33 the future will be less remote and frightening. $nd, ho'efully, we can become more relaed in the now moment. We can learn to shed the alienation, so common in today4s culture, for a more comfortable sense of time and 'lace."ick oble, Deconstructing Time, 2nd  . #dition deconstructingtime.blogs'ot.com0 Page 5  *plorations +nto The 3$man *perience )f Time While time eists inde'endently of human beings, our 'erce'tion and e'erience of time is uni6uely human. I believe it is the modern human 33 i.e. -omo sa'iens sa'iens 33 sense of time that is the key difference between humans and the other animals. $nd further I believe that time, as we e'erience it, is created by our uni6uely human brains and is critical to our sense of consciousness. $ friend of mine, who is an anthro'ologist with a Ph and who has s'ent a lifetime studying the effect migrating 'rimitive humans had on the environment, made the 'oint that whenever humans arrived at a new location, they radically changed the environment. I believe this is because humans can see 'atterns, remember those 'atterns and then 'ro7ect those 'atterns into the future. 8ut understanding 'atterns re6uires a sense of time. 9nowing when the fish ran in the 'ast and will run in the future, the birds migrate, the cro's grow, the seasons change is fundamental to human survival. his is also why humans have been able to ada't to 7ust about any environment or 'art of the world, i.e. because they could gras' new 'atterns when they moved to a new 'lace. #ven the initial 'rocess of 'erceiving 'atterns re6uired a sense of time. -umans had to see what was similar and recurring and discard what was random and inconse6uential. he 'rocess of gras'ing a 'attern meant that a culture had to relate later behavior to 'ast behavior and understand the relationshi'. While tool making has often been cited as one of the key differences between humans and animals, it was an understanding of how a tool was to be used 33 which first re6uired a memory of the 'ast 33 that determined the construction, sha'e and usefulness of the tool.
