Siddharth Kara
UNIVERSIDADE FERNANDO PESSOA   Siddharth Kara “One of the world's foremost experts on modern day slavery and human trafficking.” - Wikipedia   Kristal Souza 2013/2014 This paper reflects a small biography of this activist and author as well as his work with human traffic issues.  1 Human Traffic is a theme that has been moving me and haunting me since ever. For that purpose, I chose to talk about a man that much has done for this old but modern struggle that it is, against traffic and exploitation of people. Siddharth Kara is an activist. Nonetheless he is a business man, and there, where the two careers (better yet, a career and an inner call) touch is where his contribute for the human traffic cause becomes interesting and mind changing. Siddharth started his active life as a banker, working in finance and consulting, there is where he got in touch with many NGOs. But it was his experience in the former years of university that he started his later urge to work in the matters of human exploitation. He was the co- founder of the “Duke Refugee Action Project” that  made a bridge between students and volunteer work in Bosnian refugee camps and where he too became a volunteer. Getting in touch with such a different dehumanized reality was something that left a scar, and that scar opened some years later when he was already working as an investment banker. The amazing thing that I find in his story is that, he got into the work against human traffic, but used his former experience, from the Law Degree he took and from his work as a banker, to approach it differently. So, he dived into the modern day slavery matters, taking research trips around the world. During his travels he took notes, made interviews and got to get in touch in first hand with the human traffic reality and with victims, perpetrators, schemes, losses. This amount of data leads him to create things that define his work: a trilogy of non-fiction books that reveal contemporary slavery shapes. The first book is named “sex trafficking: inside the business of modern slavery”, which was published in 2009 and made him win the Frederick Douglass Book Prize in 2010, a prestigious prize given to non-fictional books about slavery movements. In this book, he analyzes the sex trafficking theme through a business lens, alerting to importance of the economical and legal issues implied, letting us know that it’s a market and as so has a size, importance and profit associated. His second book is named “Bonded Labour: Tackling the System of Slavery in South Asia”. Thi s book, published in 2012 is more specific on bonded labour as a not so profitable way of human traffic but surely the one that prevails through time. It also makes the connection between industry and production/consuming binominal, showing us how so deeply connected are the things we consume to the exploit of others. Siddharth Kara’s most recent accomplishment was a film based in his research on human trafficking “Trafficked”, but his work extends to articles, freedom projects, and almost anything that he can give his contribute to, through academic means or media.  2 Bibliography
